Chef Zainab is so excited to share her homemade recipe of Mantu with you! Mantu is believed to have originated in the Mongol Empire in the 13-14th centuries. Because of its convenience in size and its ability to last during traveling (from drying or freezing), mantu traveled with tradesmen across Asia and became incorporated into a variety of local cuisines. With Zainab’s mantu, she takes ground beef and seasons it with onions, garlic, coriander, mint, and cilantro, giving the meat depth in flavor, while still keeping it light and fresh. She wraps the seasoned meat in a wonton-style wrapper, which she folds shut, and steams to perfection. Once the mantu is finished cooking, she then tops them with a homemade yellow split pea sauce and a savory yogurt topping. The mantu is savory, the yellow split pea sauce is filling, and the yogurt sauce is smooth, ultimately creating the perfect balance of flavors and textures. Enjoy the mantu as an appetizer or a meal!
