Hmong-Style Kalapao (Made from Scratch Savory Filled Steamed Buns)
You may not have heard of kalapao before, but we're sure you'll fall in love with this dish! Kalapao is the Southeast Asian cousin to the Chinese-style steam bun. There are different takes on kalapao depending on ethnicity and region, and we are proud to present the Hmong-style kalapao!
We start by making our dough from scratch. We use a blend of all purpose flour and cake flour to ensure a bouncy and flexible dough. Once the dough is proofed, we portion it out into smaller pieces and roll them out into nice, flat circles. We then add the filling, which features a mix of ground chicken, Chinese sausage, mushrooms, and aromatics. We gently close up the buns and steam them until perfectly cooked. The final product is a soft, pillowy bun with a savory and juicy umami filling. You can enjoy kalapao on its own or as a starter for your meal.
